Athletics South Africa (ASA) has officially announced a major setback for the national team, confirming the withdrawal of top sprinter Bayanda Walaza from the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The decision comes after a comprehensive medical evaluation determined that a hamstring injury, sustained during his race at the Diamond League Final in Zurich on Thursday, 25 August 2025, would prevent him from competing.

This news is a significant blow to Team South Africa’s hopes, as Walaza was expected to be a key contender in the men’s 100m event. The injury, which he picked up while pushing for a strong finish, was severe enough to rule him out of the pinnacle of the athletics calendar.
In a statement released by ASA, the organization emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of the athlete’s long-term health and the integrity of the national team. “ASA and the Athletics Family wishes him a speedy recovery,” the statement read, highlighting the support for the injured athlete.

The vacancy left by Walaza’s withdrawal will be filled by fellow sprinter Retshidisitswe Mlenga, who will now step up to represent South Africa in the men’s 100m race. Mlenga’s inclusion ensures the team maintains a strong presence in the event, though the absence of Walaza’s form will undoubtedly be felt.
The World Athletics Championships, scheduled from 13-21 September, will now see Mlenga carry the torch for the men’s 100m. Fans and fellow athletes are now rallying behind him, hoping for a strong performance on the world stage.
