JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced the formation of an independent panel to investigate whether SA Under-19 cricket captain David Teeger breached the organization’s Code of Conduct or that of his provincial team, the Central Gauteng Lions, during a speech at an awards ceremony last month.

Teeger sparked controversy when he dedicated his Rising Star award, received at the ABSA Jewish Achievers Awards in October, to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers.

“Yes, I’ve been given this award, and yes, I’m now the Rising Star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel,” Teeger said.

The Palestine Solidarity Alliance (PSA) filed a formal complaint with CSA, prompting the board to appoint advocate Wim Trengove to lead an independent inquiry into Teeger’s remarks.

The PSA has called for Teeger’s suspension ahead of the upcoming ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa next year. The alliance described Teeger’s comments as “a provocative and inflammatory political statement.”

CSA has stated that the inquiry will be conducted expeditiously, and Trengove’s findings and reasoning will be made public. The organization has refrained from further comment until the inquiry’s completion.
