Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena is over the moon after completing his dream moves to champions Mamelodi Sundowns on a three-and-a-half-year deal in the current transfer window, having been a huge fan of the Pretoria team’s style of play and how they have dominated local football.

With many clubs after his signature including Kaizer Chiefs and Belgium side Anderlecht fc, Mokoena finally made his largely talked about switch from SuperSport United to rivals Sundowns.  

The move is rumoured to be worth millions and will set the star in good financial stead going forward.  He leaves SuperSport after an incredible six-and-a-half years.

Having also become a national figure for Bafana Bafana’s coach Hugo Broos, with his work ethic on the pitch, passing range, defensive traits, and knack to find the goal, Mokoena believes he will become an even better player at Mamelodi Sundowns.

“SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed terms for the permanent move of Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena with immediate effect for an undisclosed fee,” says SuperSport in a statement.

“Mokoena joined the club’s academy in the 2014/15 season from Virginia (Harmony) Sports Academy and made an immediate impact in helping Matsatsantsa to win the Metropolitan Cup back-to-back and was promoted to the first team within the same season of making his DStv Diski Challenge debut against Bloemfontein Celtic.

“He made his professional debut against Highlands Park and has since played just under 200 games for Matsatsantsa scoring over 20 goals.

“The 24 -year-old played a crucial role in helping Matsatsantsa lift the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup trophy twice and contributed immensely in SuperSport United’s historic CAF Confederations Cup journey, finishing as runners-up losing narrowly to DRCs TP Mazembe in 2017.

“Mokoena has also scooped many personal accolades including the 2020/21 goal of the season, three-goal of the month and many more club awards. The Bafana Bafana international has represented South African in all youth levels (U17, U20, U23) and featured for the U23 side in 2020 Tokyo Olympic games in August having played all three games, scoring one goal,” reads the club statement.

  • He was raised by a single mother after his father died when he was 13 years old and is an only child.
  • He graduated from the SuperSport United academy after he was signed from Harmony Sports Academy with Sipho Mbule, who also hails from Bethlehem.
  • Teboho Mokoena’s father, Alexis “Didi’ Motaung, was a professional footballer for Hellenic and Qwa-Qwa Stars. He passed away in 2010 after he failed to fully recover from a motor crash in 2007.
  •  Mokoena represented South African from U20 before the U23 and eventually Bafana Bafana with 15 caps before his 25th birthday.
  •  Teboho Mokoena’s first goal came in the 2017/18 season during a 4-2 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Lucas Moripe. He went on to bang in 15 goals and 17 assists in his 156 games for SuperSport United.
